Party Foul! Here’s How to Get Red Wine Out of Your Carpet

As a carpet cleaning service, we have seen our own fair share of wine stains throughout San Fernando Valley, CA. Stains are the primary reason our customers seek us out, whether they are caused by food and drink, pets or careless guests tracking in mud. However, if you just had your carpet cleaned only to face the horrifying splash of red wine on your carpet, have no fear—it can be removed. Here are four ways to do it:

  • Club soda: If you are having a party and serving drinks, chances are you have club soda handy. This red wine stain conqueror has been used successfully for several hundred years, and it continues to be a go-to today. When the spill occurs, first blot the wine with a clean, dry cloth and remove as much as possible. Once done, pour the club soda on it and blot again. Repeat this process until the stain is gone.
  • Detergent and white vinegar: So, you’re having a wine and beer party, and you have no club soda. Fear not—you have another option. Dishwashing soap and white vinegar also offer wine stain removal prowess. To use, first blot the wine stain until you remove as much wine from the carpet as possible. Make a cleaning solution with one tablespoon of dishwashing soap and a tablespoon of vinegar to two cups of warm water. Use a white cloth so towel pigment does not bleed into the carpet as you clean. From there, pour the solution on the stain and use the cloth to blot it until the stain disappears.
  • Hydrogen peroxide: Another useful home item if you do not have club soda or white vinegar is hydrogen peroxide. Make a cleaning solution with two parts hydrogen peroxide and one part dishwashing soap. Check for colorfastness on a discreet area on your carpet or rug. If there is no bleeding or discoloration, move on to the next step and apply the solution to the stain. Blot the stain and apply solution repeatedly until you remove the stain completely.
  • Commercial products: If you do not want to waste club soda or mix cleaning solutions, there are commercial products designed for the task. Wine Away is a favorite of the editors of Good Housekeeping, and it can even remove dry stains if you notice the wine spill the next morning. Even bright white carpet can be restored with Wine Away. Wired likes Chateau Spill, and it works similarly to Wine Away. If you prefer an easier solution for wine removal, keeping either of these products on hand for emergencies is a great option for DIY carpet stain removal.

While home solutions for wine stains often do the job, you may find the stains do not go away without a fight. If that is the case, there is no shame in calling a professional.
